QOU Holds a Series of Training Workshops in Translation and Linguistics skills through Freelancing

QOU held a series of training workshops in translation and linguistics, as part of “Enhancing the Capacity of Palestinian Higher Education Institutions in Providing Cross-border Employability Skills” Reach project, which aims to reduce the gap between the skills of graduates and the requirements of the labor market in order to increase their chances of obtaining remote jobs, in the field of translation.
Dr. Attia Musleh, The Branch Manager praised the students’ interest to develop their skills, especially in English language, which is crucial for communicating with people in various areas. He also expressed his gratitude to the Alumni Follow-up Unit and the Center for Continuing Education for their efforts to support the progress of students and graduates by setting up training programs that adhere to national and international quality standards.
Dr. Majid Hassanien, Head of the English language Department at QOU explained that this training comes within the activities of Reach project which is implemented in collaboration with many universities in Europe and Palestine.
The training will be supervised by Dr. Majid Hassanein, Dr. Nashat Masryi, and Mr. Nael Abu Arqoub, who visited the University of Alicante in Spain as part of the project’s activities.

First Session:
November 28, 2022
QOU held the first training session in “Translation and Linguistics” as part of a series of meetings totaling 40 training hours. The first meeting included six training hours and was supervised by Dr. Majed Hasanein. It dealt with an explanation of the concepts and definitions of translation. The trainees were introduced to theories and types of translation, in addition to the most important tools used.

Second Session:
December 5, 2022
The second meeting was also supervised by Dr. Majed Hasanein. It included six training hours and dealt with problems and challenges of translation in terms of grammar, meaning, and terminology.

Third Session:
12 December, 2022
The third meeting was supervised by Dr. Nael Abu Arqoub. It dealt with an explanation of legal translation, its types and characteristics, legal terminology used in agreements and contracts, as well as training on translating documents, certificates, and contracts.

Fourth Session:
December 14, 2022
The fourth meeting was supervised by Dr. Nael Abu Arqoub. The main topic was engineering contracts, specifically the types and parties involved. It also discussed media and news translation techniques, skills, and methods of mastering them.

Fifth Session:
December 26,2022
The fifth meeting was supervised by Dr. Nash’at Masri. It included (6) training hours and dealt with the mechanism of installing MemoQ translation software with an explanation of the program’s interface and how to use it.

Sixth Session:
December 31, 2022
The sixth and final meeting was supervised by Dr. Nashát Masri and included (6) training hours. It focused on how to create a professional resume. The trainees were also introduced to one of the most important online freelancing platforms, which is Upwork, and the mechanism for searching for work and applying to the offered jobs.

The meetings included several activities (which can be considered as small projects) where each participant was required to implement under the supervision of the trainer.
